Red Cross Noles is a student interest group at Florida State University. It was founded by Christian Ponder (Florida State University’s quarterback) and Melanie Cabassol in the Fall of 2010. The mission of this student group is to make Florida State University (FSU) one of the most disaster preparedness campus in the United States. They began this challenge by tackling on their first major event SUPER CPR DAY, which was co-hosted by the Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross. The goal of SUPER CPR DAY was to get as many college students and community members certified in Adult CPR training.

“Every 32 seconds, someone in the U.S. dies from cardiac or respiratory related illness,” said Ponder, who also served as the president of the Cross Noles, an FSU service organization dedicated to the Red Cross’ mission. “If we prepare students with life-saving CPR skills, then more lives would be spared.”

More than 200 students and community members participated in this event on November 14, 2010 to learn how to save lives by learning CPR.  Attendees received life-saving CPR training under American Red Cross guidelines, as well as a life-saving CPR certification upon passing the written and skills test.

“This event allowed us to teach a low-cost, short time frame CPR course while raising money for the Red Cross mission,” said Shannon Kid, an intern at the Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross. “The money could go to providing clothes and a hotel stay for a family after a house fire, or help with funding emergency supplies in case of a disaster.”

Sponsors of this event included Tallahassee Memorial Heart & Vascular Center, Leon County EMS, Southeastern School of Health Sciences and WCTV.
