Upon completion of the required training, you will be asked to join the Disaster Services Human Resource (DSHR) System. By becoming a member of the Disaster Services Human Resource (DSHR) you will be eligible to use the Disaster Leave Law during a disaster or emergency.
After you review the materials listed below, please assure that you meet the qualifications for Disaster Leave for American Red Cross Disaster Services Volunteers. If so, the following is recommended for your immediate action.
Have a meeting with your supervisor.
- Show your supervisor your Disaster Services Human Resource (DSHR) credentials.
- Discuss the Disaster Leave Law with your supervisor. If needed, please show the supervisor the enclosed page entitled American Red Cross Disaster Relief Operations: Information for Supervisors. This may give your supervisor a better understanding of why we may request your services before a disaster, such as a hurricane, actually makes land fall.
Your supervisory meeting should produce an understanding relative to your volunteer service and assist in eliminating potential problems when your services is needed and you desire to volunteer.
In the future when a disaster is imminent, and you are contacted, and you desire is to serve: it is your responsibility to complete American Red Cross Form 6520-B (or Form 6520-B County for County Employees) . Take the form to your supervisor for completion of the second section and then report immediately to the Staffing Function at the Disaster Relief Operation Headquarters. It is imperative that you follow these procedures. Therefore, keep the Form 6520-B (or Form 6520-B County for County Employees) at your work site. In the future we will not be able to use your much needed services if you don't follow these procedures.
After Form 6520-B (or Form 6520-B County for County Employees) has been completed by you and your supervisor, distribution is as follows:
ORGINAL COPY - Bring with you to the Staffing Function
ONE COPY - To your supervisor or unit head
ONE COPY - To your personnel or human resources office
ONE COPY - For your files
